Have you ever had déjà vu while watching a movie? There is something so familiar about the film, but you can't quite figure out why. I experienced this feeling watching the 2014 film "Comet," which is incredibly similar to the movie "500 Days of Summer." Both plots go as such:
The lead male characters have been living a sad, cynical life until the day they meet the lead female characters. The lead female characters are hesistant towards the lead males at first, but they soon warm up to them and they start dating. The relationships are pure bliss, complete with dream sequences and mischevious cavorts, until one day the lead ladies break off the relationship. The lead males are heartbroken, but they encounter the lead ladies a few months later. The couples rekindle their relationship, only for the lead ladies to break it off again and leave the lead males devasted. The lead males later find out that the lead ladies are engaged or married to other men. The movies end with the lead males becoming sad and cynical again until something occurs that implies they will be happy eventually.
Other than the coincadental plots, the movies "500 Days of Summer" and "Comet" are practically the same movie for these 5 reasons:
1. The leads for both movies look eerily similar.
Both leading ladies are dark haired, doe-eyed and quirky as all get out.
Kimberly (Comet)
Summer (500 Days of Summer)
2. The movie is told through nonlinear narrative, so the relationship is viewed like a montage of the couple's best and worst moments. The nonlinear narrative makes both movies more interesting and allows for suspense.
3. There is a train scene in both films that involves a heart-to-heart between the couples and the rekindling of their relationships. Unfortunately, soon after the train scenes in both movies both couples break up and the characters are back to square one.

Dell & Kimberly (Comet)
Tom & Summer (500 Days of Summer)
4. When the leading ladies upset the leading men they start breaking glass, because it's the best way to constructively deal with emotions. In "500 Days of Summer," Tom stands in his kitchen dropping and shattering plates when Summer breaks up with him, and in "Comet" Dell punches mirrors. All that is ever accomplished through this is a bloody hand and a messy kitchen.
Even though "500 Days of Summer" and "Comet" have major (and not so major) similarites, these films are very well written, the couples have wonderful chemistry, and they feature beautiful cinematography. You'll become captivated by the couples' stories, and you won't regret viewing either of these films.

"500 Days of Summer" was directed by Marc Webb, written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tom and Zooey Deschanel as Summer. "Comet" was written and directed by Sam Esmail and stars Justin Long as Dell and Emmy Rossum as Kimberly.
